Raspy Juice is the experimentor's expansion board to power supply a Raspberry Pi (RPi) host computer with a regulated +5V from a wide-range of voltage sources. Its main features are:
a 6 ~ 23V to +5V, 3A high-efficiency DC-DC SMPS Battery Eliminator Circuit (BEC) regulator, with the ability to be powered from a variety of external sources such as batteries, 12V power adapters, solar battery sources, etc.
an RTC real-time clock, with a backup super capacitor and provisions of soldering an additional backup battery.
an RS232 level translator to breakout the host console serial port from the GPIO UART
an expansion AVR ATmega168A microcontroller (MCU).
The expansion MCU interfaced to the host computer as an I2C slave device has headers for connecting up to 4 channels of RC servos, daisy-chaining RS485 devices, and a software-based RS232 output for other embedded devices. Additionally, the spare pins of the MCU are brought to an expansion header which can be used for external circuitry with digital bit-banging and analog-to-digital conversions. A pre-installed firmware provides the above interfacing services but is also upgradeable by the host computer and may be reprogrammed for other application-specific purposes.
